Surf’s Up 5k Little Surfer 1 Mile Virginia Beach VA

The 2015 Surf’s Up 5K and Little Surfer 1 Mile Race in Virginia Beach is just one of the many events going on near Portsmouth, VA, this April. As a benefit for One Team One Fight, the race funds go to support The Navy Seal and Travis Manion Foundations.

Important Details

If you’ve ever been part of a race event, you know it can be crazy. Figuring out where to go when is definitely a challenge, especially when you’re toting along tiny athletes. So here’s the skinny on the Surf’s Up and Little Surfer Race:

  • Date: The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 19, 2015.
  • Time: The 1-mile race starts at 8:30 am and the 5K starts at 9 am.
  • Location: Head over to Oceanfront Boardwalk at the corner of 17th Street and Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach to get in the race or cheer from the sidelines.

You’ll want to show up early for registration (see below) if you plan to sign up the same day. And notice that the times listed above are when the races actually start, so you’ll need to give yourself plenty of time to get prepared.

Sponsors of the 2015 Surf’s Up 5K and Little Surfer 1 Mile Race in Virginia Beach include Buffalo Wild Wings, Starbucks, P.F. Chang’s, Panera Bread, GNC, New Balance, and One Life Fitness.

Early registration has closed, but you can still register until April 1. The prices are tiered based on which race, how many runners, and the age of each runner.

  • Individual racer in the 5K: $40
  • 5K running team of 3 or more: $35 per runner
  • Individual racer in the kids run: $25
  • Kids running team of 3 or more: $20 per runner

All racers must be at least 2 years of age, and children will need a signed consent form to participate. There’s public parking for the event on site.

Few things are more exciting to a runner than collecting all of those race T-shirts. So you’ll be happy to know that all Surf’s Up 5K participants will receive a tech T-shirt as well as designer finishing medals. Little Surfer participants will earn a finishing medal regardless of their placement or finishing time.

If you plan to attend this race and it’s your first one, there are several things you’ll want to keep in mind. First of all, charity races are usually crowded because everyone wants to run to support a good cause. Second, if there are kids involved, there’s always the potential for a meltdown, whether from a boo-boo or exhaustion.

So you want to be prepared. Try to bring as little with you as possible so you can maneuver through the crowd easily. Sunblock up before you leave the car and be sure to leave everything you can in the car.

Above all, these races are meant to be fun. Happy runners mean a great event. So be sure to get out there, run your heart out, and have a great time supporting a great cause at this local event near Portsmouth, VA.

Polar Plunge Virginia Beach, VA

Your ultimate guide to the 2015 Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach is here!

Polar plunges across the country raise funds for a variety of charitable organizations ranging from police departments to public school recreational programming. The Polar Plunge Winter Festival in Virginia Beach raises money for one of the best causes. In the United States, it is estimated that 4.6 million people have a developmental or intellectual disability. The Virginia Beach Polar Plunge raises funds to provide free programming for both children and adults with intellectual disability.

The theme for this year’s Polar Plunge Winter Fest is “The (Bow) Ties that Bind Us,” and takes place in Virginia Beach from February 6th through the 7th. The 2015 festival will include four great challenges with a variety of prizes and raffles. Prizes include t-shirts, beach towels, bow ties, and a chance to win some great prices including a $100 Walmart gift card, Water Country fun cards, Busch Gardens fun cards, two-night stay at Great Wolf Lodge, a $500 Walmart gift card, an Over the Edge Spot with helmet cam, hotel vouchers, and more.

On February 6th a Cool School Challenge will be held for students and teachers. Together, they’ll take a plunge into the ocean wearing bowties and sharing their pride. On February 7th three more events will take place. The Plunge 5K is a great 5K race for stroller pushers, walkers, and runners of any age. Online registration ends on February 1st but you can register on event day for $40. The Pee Wee Plunge will be held for plungers aged 10 and under. These tiny humans will plunge in to a cold (cool) kiddie pool and be entered to earn prizes. And the Polar Plunge will follow with over 3,500 plungers braving the Atlantic Ocean. The average water temperature of the Atlantic in early February is in the mid 30s. Plungers of all ages must raise at least $100 to participate in the plunge. Other events during this festive weekend include costume contests and a costume parade.

This event is a fundraiser above all, and a fun event second. Remember that you have to raise $100 to plunge, so getting those donations is huge. Make it a fun event and go door to door in your neighborhood with a group of other plungers, ask friends and family, or save up to donate on your own. Don’t be afraid to ask coworkers, teachers, and strangers for a donation. You never know who will be willing to contribute to the cause.

This year’s plunge is sponsored by FM99 WNOR, News Channel 3, 106.9 The Fox, WGNT, Virginia Natural Gas, Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia, Knights of Columbus, Booz/Allen/Hamilton, Walmart, Hardees, Free Agents Marketing, United, Health Journal, Yelp. TJ Max, and more.

The event will take place on the oceanfront between 9th and 6th streets in Virginia Beach. In Richmond, Southwest Virginia, and Northern Virginia smaller plunges will take place for those who want to do more or who can’t attend the plunge in Virginia Beach. Local hotels will have special rates for those plunging, and local vendors will sell sandwiches and hot drinks in the heated Plunge tent.

How to Check Your Car Battery Voltage

Anyone who has driven a vehicle for any length of time knows that sinking feeling when you climb in to the driver’s seat, turn the key and get nothing. As you try to start your car one more time, and then another, your thoughts turn to how much is this going to cost, and is it just a dead battery or something more sinister?

Of course most major auto parts stores will offer to test your battery for free, but those stores aren’t performing house calls, and as previously stated your car isn’t going anywhere either. So how can you diagnose what might be wrong with your car’s charging system at home? It’s easy enough with a little elbow grease and a multimeter, also sometimes called a voltmeter.

A multimeter can be an intimidating piece of equipment to operate, especially if you have never used one before. Testing automotive batteries is pretty straightforward, however. These units will have a dial on the front that gives you a number of options. No matter what brand, or how many choices, you always want to find the “V.” Sometimes there will be more than one V, and in that case you want to find the one with a straight line over top of it. Can it also have a dashed line? Sure, as long as there is a solid line present above the V, it’s correct.

Before you start working under your car’s hood, there are a couple safety tips that should be followed for good measure. Always make sure you are working on your car in a well-ventilated area, and wear protective eyewear and clothing.

Once you have properly adjusted the dial, it is time to connect the probes. There should be a red (positive) and black (negative). Go color to color, with the red probe connecting to your battery’s positive terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal.

With the probes in contact with the terminals, refer to the multimeter’s gauge. Whether digital or analog, doesn’t matter. Batteries differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, and there are other factors at play like battery age, but a good battery should read in a certain range. As long as your battery is measuring somewhere in the neighborhood of 12.6 volts, the battery is good. Find a measurement less than that, and a battery replacement is probably in your future.

Tips for Getting Approved for an Auto Loan

If you want to make sure that you are able to get behind the wheel of a vehicle that you can love and enjoy, it is important that you secure the finances necessary. In most cases, people do not have the thousands of dollars available in liquid form to purchase a quality vehicle. Anyone who needs to make sure that they are able to purchase their vehicle should follow these tips to getting approved for an auto loan.

#1: Have a Quality Down Payment Ready

Money talks, no matter what kind of vehicle you are attempting to purchase. For instance, if you are getting ready to purchase an automobile, you have a much better chance of getting approved for an auto loan when you can put some money down behind it. The bigger the down payment, the greater the chance you will have to get approved. The reason for this is that it shows that despite a credit score, you will have the money needed to secure the vehicle. Also, you are making the principal loan amount much smaller but cutting into it with a down payment.

#2: Look at a Variety of Lenders

Many people go to their bank and stop there when it comes to looking for a loan. One of the best things you can do in order to get approved for a loan is branch out and find other lenders who can look out for you. For instance, one of the best resources is a Federal credit union loan. In many cases, these financial institutions will have much opportunity for you, in the form of a great loan, with great interest rates. Make sure that you reach out to as many lenders as you can in order to find out what kinds of rates they are able to offer you.

#3: Get a Personal Loan

If the bank is not able to approve you for a large amount of money, you can go through a friend or family member for a personal loan. The personal loan can be for the entirety of the automobile amount, or can help you secure a smaller loan to finance it, while using the personal loan for the rest of it.

#4: Fix Your Credit

If the vehicle purchase is not particularly urgent, you should take a little bit of time to get your credit together. The first thing you need to do is pull your credit report, so that you know your score and the terms that are laid out within it. This way, you will know exactly what the report says and why your credit is in its current state. You will also be able to dispute any instances on your credit report that you do not feel are valid, such as a bogus collections account. When you take full advantage of the credit report, you will be able to pay off your debt and check your report periodically to boost your credit score and your credit report.

So what are you waiting for? Follow along with these four tips, so that you are able to get behind the wheel of a vehicle that will get you where you need to go. This will provide you with everything that you need in order to get a car that will suit you, without having to worry about where the money will come from. If you follow these tips, you will have the foundation to secure a quality loan and shop for a car, truck or SUV that will get you where you need to go without any unnecessary financial setbacks. For additional financial assistance, visit Cavalier Ford Chesapeake Square‘s Finance Department page or fill out a credit application to see what you can be approved for.
