Where To Volunteer/ Donate Around The Holidays in Chesapeake, VA

In the spirit of giving and being thankful, families across the world take the time during the holiday season to share their wealth with others. Whether that wealth is extra time, extra money, or a small gift, for those less fortunate it can make a huge difference. Sometimes what seems like a small thing to some, feels life-changing to someone else.

If you’re feeling thankful this season or you’re in need of a reminder of your own blessings, consider donating your time to some of our favorite organizations in Chesapeake.

Where to Volunteer

Toys for Tots is a wonderful program that distributes toys to children from disadvantaged families in the Chesapeake community. Whether you have the time to donate your time at their local warehouse, assist with meals, or assist in transportation and storage of toys, you’ll be helping out your community when you volunteer here. Run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots partners with local businesses like 92.9 The Wave, ESPN 94.1, and the Tidewater Division Mid-Eastern Region National Model Railroad Association.

Chesapeake Care Clinic provides dental and medical care to adults who don’t qualify for medical insurance. With an entirely volunteer staff, Chesapeake Care Clinic is always looking for more

qualified practitioners. Whether you’re a medical provider, dental provider, pharmacist or other health care professional, they’d be happy to have you. There are also volunteer opportunities for those who don’t have a health care background.

Volunteers of America in Chesapeake is always looking for volunteers. If you have time to spare this season, consider signing up for one of their volunteer programs. They have three main programs at Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter, Residential Program Center, and Loudon Emergency Homeless Shelter. You can also search for other volunteer opportunities in Maryland, DC and other areas of Virginia like Portsmouth and Suffolk.

The Chesapeake Humane Society is a safe-haven for abandoned and mistreated pets. With thousands of pets being abandoned every year, many of them will not be adopted and will either be transferred to a rescue group of humanely euthanized. Spending your time or money at a please like Humane Society could mean saving a life. Volunteering your time, donating money, or adopting a pet instead of buying a puppy, could be one life-changing for you and your family.

The City of Chesapeake Police Department Animal Services Unit can use your particular talents to help an abandoned pet find a new home. With opportunities including being an adoption counselor, kennel assistant, office assistant, taking care of the pets, being a shelter media technician or volunteer driver could help save the lives of hundreds of animals.

The Salvation Army is open to volunteers and donators year round. Around the holiday season, though, they look for Christmas Assistance volunteers to help set up the Christmas Depot warehouse and distribution. This program helps families having a tough time this holiday season, get presents for their children between the ages of 0 and 11. You could also help fill over 13,000 stockings for children ages 6-14, which will likely be the difference between feeling loved and feeling left out this holiday season.

Not everyone has time to donate their time, and that’s completely understandable. If you’re not able to volunteer, consider donating to any one, or all, of these charitable organizations. A small donation for you may be nothing, but for someone else could be what helps them get through the holiday season this year.

At Cavalier Ford Chesapeake Square, we strive to help our community and donate to those in need. For any additional information please contact us today. If you are in the market for a new vehicle, stop by the dealership to take a test drive or view our current inventory page.

Cyber Monday Deals

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season for many in Chesapeake. Whether you’re out shopping right after dinner, or you’re waiting in long lines on Black Friday, it’s pretty likely you won’t get everything on your shopping list. That’s why Cyber Monday is a fabulous alternative.

How do you find the best deals? Finding Cyber Monday deals before the week of Black Friday is difficult. Retailers simply haven’t released the information yet. However, finding deals at your favorite Chesapeake retailers could be as easy as asking the sales clerk.

Amazon.com always has tons of deals on anything from electronics and toys to clothing and niche items. They’ve got a Black Friday countdown on their website, which is when their deals will start. They’re adding more deals to their site every day, and some great deals end before Black Friday is even here. Best Buy is a favorite for those looking to buy technology products for a steal. On Black Friday, the store is a madhouse which is why shopping online on Cyber Monday has become such a big trend. Target on Black Friday is crazy. That’s all there is to it. From doorbuster deals to some of the best discounts on movies and toys, Target is the place to be. But if elbowing other customers, or standing in line for 5 or 6 hours doesn’t seem like your thing, maybe you should shop online on Cyber Monday instead. It could be the difference between getting frostbite and eating ice cream on your couch.

Toys R Us has already released some of their deals in their Christmas Book. Though many of their coupons end on Saturday, there are so many ways to save with Toys R Us. With their great return policy and price match guarantee, it’s easy to shop there and know that you don’t have to worry about the after-effects of your purchase.

Best Turkey Recipes

Thanksgiving is about three main things; family, food, and the beginning of the Holiday Season. Family can mean anything to everyone. It can mean a big family reunion with all of your cousins, aunts and uncles, and close family friends. Or it can mean a small get-together with your closest friends who might as well be related to you.

It doesn’t really matter because as long as there’s good food, everyone will have a wonderful time. And with Thanksgiving night and Black Friday shopping, Thanksgiving also traditionally marks the beginning of the holiday season. Whether you’re celebrating Chanukah this year, Christmas, or Mawlid al-Nabi, you’ll likely be getting in the holiday spirit just after Thanksgiving.

While we can’t help with the family, or the holiday shopping, we’d love to help you out with a short list of our favorite Thanksgiving turkey recipes this season.

Herb and Citrus Butter Roasted Turkey

This fresh flavored turkey takes only about 30 minutes of prep time. But it will take about 4 hours at 425 degrees F to roast. You’ll want to add a 20 minute rest time when calculating your timing. This recipe is designed for 10-12 servings and it includes a gravy recipe.

Herb-Roasted Turkey

This recipe also gives nutritional information, so those health-conscious guests can rest easy with that knowledge should you choose to share it.

This new favorite serves about 10-12 people. With the most time-consuming preparation, this turkey takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes of attention, with 45 minutes of that heating the oil in your turkey fryer. You’ll then add the turkey and fry for about 35 to 45 minutes with the oil temperature between 300 and 325 degrees. You’ll also want to include 25 minutes of standing time before carving for the best flavor and texture.

Apple-Brined Turkey

This less traditional, but delicious recipe fit for the fall season, takes quite a bit of prep. But that deep apple flavor will soak through every bite. You’ll have to brine it first, let it refrigerate for 12 hours, then uncover it and refrigerate another 12 hours. Thankfully it only takes about 2 hours at 400 degrees to cook.

World’s Simplest Thanksgiving Turkey

This super-simple recipe is a go-to for the no-muss-no-fuss cook. This recipe involves salt, pepper, and melted butter on the outside and whatever you want on the inside.
